Hey all!! Hope you all are doing good, I am so glad that live music and concerts are coming back!
So this time around I am going to be talking about the amazing and talented UMG Island Records artist Young Devyn. I had a great opportunity to attend an °1824 press conference (according to °1824 Instagram bio, they are a first-of-its-kind network of young creatives focused on content and the connection of artists directly to fans, with Universal Music Group artists!) This was an amazing experience because I learned a lot about this Brooklyn Soca R&B rapper that I had not know about before. A lot of things were discussed including Baby Goat that is set to release on Friday June 18!
Young Devyn was born in raised in Brooklyn with a passionate Trinidadian background. Her roots and where she came from is very important to her which is inspiring because no matter the success that comes to her, she stays humble and doesn’t forget where she came from which I loved to learn about from her. She began singing around the age of 8! Very impressive I would say. Her inspiration for the genre of music she writes was greatly influenced by amazing rappers such as Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill.

Hearing Young Devyn speak about her life and talking about her music was really intriguing to me. She is one of those girls I think I would get along with really well. One of the first things she talked about was therapy and how it helped her tremendously throughout the years. On behalf of Black Talk Radio, she asked “how has being Trinidadian impacted you as an artist?”. Young Devyn gave a great answer explaining how it is one of the biggest influences on her music. It really sets her apart as an artist with her unique background. Soca music definitely isn’t as well known as reggae as well as Trinidad isn’t as popular as Jamaica to people who don’t share those roots. Her difference is not having her music that mainstream because of where she came from. Young Devyn explained it really helped her with her “flow” and her “twang” and the way she says certain words. Hearing these facts come from her really makes her music that much more meaningful.
Throughout the interview, we got to see some pretty dope music videos and listen to some of her songs. I have to say they really caught my attention! The flow and energy in all of her music videos were outstanding. You will find yourself dancing in your car, your couch, your outdoor walk, or anywhere you are listening to her music. I am all about the vibes and energy and even the outfits she wears are awesome!

There were some other fun questions thrown into the interview with her. She was asked what kind of tattoos does she have. I thought this was a fun questions because I have a few tattoos myself that I love! She told us that she has a music note tattoo, the word “blessed” in Mandarin, and a butterfly. The butterfly is especially cool because I think that is going to be one of my next tattoo choices!
Girls who listened asked, “Have you ever considered writing for anyone?” Young Devyn joyfully responded back saying yes. Because well, of course! I know I would. I loved these fun laid back questions to really get to know her as not just an artist but an everyday person like you and me as well. There were some pretty good deep questions about her career but also light-hearted conversations too. I enjoyed the balance and diversity of the whole time within the conversation.
An interesting point that came up is when she was talking about why there is no profanity in her music. The reason behind it is she began writing music (which is so awesome actually) at the age of eight years old!! Like what!? that is so cool but makes sense because you don’t really use that kind of language as a child. She always wrote in school like that so profanity did not come naturally to her. When she was in school she was told to read a page in the dictionary every day to retain these words. I think using better word alternatives are way better than profanity in my opinion so I definitely admire that a lot! That explains her amazing words and bars in her music! I enjoyed that question a lot, it was a good one.
Young Devyn was also asked by a lovely person if she had any remaining goals for 2021. She responded by expressing how she wants to get her name out there and for her EP to do great. She wants people to hear it and embrace it. That was a great answer! I wish her all the best success for her music to be discovered by more and more people as well, she deserves it for sure!

Envy Magazine was also a part of the panel of interviewers and asked Young Devyn, “Since your music is bar heavy, how do you come up with lyrics and what goes into your process of writing?” I really liked this questions because it is not something I thought about or noticed right away. She responded with a great answer. She said that she pays attention a lot to conversation and sees what people react to the most. She gave an example such as the pandemic, that gave a huge reaction from people. There are a lot of reactions that is captivating to listeners, it is important to grab the attention of everyone. She thinks about truth and the inspiration around her. Young Devyn in her younger years was a casual hip hop listener but then discovered bars and metaphors through her inspiration artists such as Nicki Minaj and then Meek Mill, etc. She really tapped into a great bars area of her hip-hop genre. The talent and thought process she has is well noticed and I admire this about the young artist. You can really tell she puts a lot of time and effort into her songs that are meaningful to her and to her life.
I really enjoyed getting to know Young Devyn. She gave really insightful answers. The respect I have for her and all other Jamaican artists is through the roof. Throughout this whole experience I can definitely tell that her roots and where she came from really shape her music and who she is as an artist. That is really admirable to me because nowadays you see a lot of people who struck fame forget where they came from. But not Young Devyn. She says that her family and everyone around her keeps her grounded, which you can definitely tell, and remembers the past for important reasons. She is humble, unique, and falls into a great genre of music that is meaningful to her and her cultures.
Remember to listen to Baby Goat that is set to release on Friday June 18! You won’t want to miss this one.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, hope you enjoyed, I know I did! Until next time, peace! 🙂
